Vitamin D deficiency is quite common, particularly among the elderly. A study conducted at a hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, found an almost universal deficiency in vitamin D among a group of 548 elderly patients who were admitted for hip fractures. Likewise, low vitamin D levels have been associated with increased risk for multiple sclerosis, myofascial pain, and certain forms of cancer.
