T.A.P.S.: 60 capsules. Silybum marianum (milk thistle) has been used for centuries as an herbal medicine for the treatment of liver disease. Silymarin’s hepatoprotective effects are accomplished via several mechanisms including antioxidation, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, enhanced liver detoxification via inhibition of Phase I detoxification and enhanced glucuronidation, and protection of glutathione depletion. Curcuma longa, a perennial herb, is the source of the spice turmeric. Current research has focused on the constituent curcumin’s antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, and antimicrobial properties, in addition to its use in cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disorders. Picrorhiza is used in Ayurvedic medicine to optimize liver function and as an anti-inflammatory. In studies, Picrorhiza extracts and their constituents protected liver cells from damage caused by carbon tetrachloride, aflatoxin B1, and acetaminophen. Picrorhiza acts as an antioxidant and inhibitor of lipid peroxidation in cell membranes, and increases bile flow. The hepatoprotective effects of Picrorhiza may be due to its antioxidant activity – inhibition of oxygen anion generation and free radical scavenging. Picrorhiza’s antioxidant effect has been shown to be similar to that of superoxide dismutase, metal-ion chelators, and xanthine oxidase inhibitors. Like silymarin, Picrorhiza can stimulate liver regeneration, possibly via stimulation of nucleic acid and protein synthesis. Animal studies indicate Picrorhiza’s constituents exhibit strong anticholestatic activity against a variety of liver-toxic substances, appearing to be even more potent than silymarin. Picrorhiza also exhibits a dose-dependent choleretic activity, evidenced by enhanced bile production and flow. Picrorhiza also benefits individuals with acute hepatitis. In a double-blind study, it reduced bilirubin and the liver enzymes ALT and AST significantly compared to placebo.

Fractionated Pectin Powder: 5 ozs. Fractionated pectin, also known as modified citrus pectin (MCP), is a complex polysaccharide obtained from the peel and pulp of citrus fruits. Metastasis is one of the most life threatening aspects of cancer and the lack of effective anti-metastatic therapies has prompted research on the effectiveness of MCP in blocking the metastasis of certain types of cancers, including melanomas and prostate and breast cancers. MCP is rich in galactoside residues, giving it an affinity for certain types of cancer cells. These galactoside residues bind to lectins on cell membranes, preventing attachment of these unwanted cells. Fractionated pectin may also be able to kill prostate cancer cells. A recent in vitro study using Thorne’s Fractionated Pectin found it significantly induced apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells. Regular citrus pectin and the pH-modified product, Pecta-Sol, had little or no apoptotic activity. Modified citrus pectin (fractionated pectin) has been shown in animal studies to reduce metastases of certain tumor types, and should especially be emphasized at the time of surgical excision or biopsy. In two clinical studies, fractionated pectin has also been demonstrated to slow the rate of PSA rise in patients with metastatic prostate cancer. Each scoop of Fractionated Pectin Powder supplies 6.5 grams of fractionated pectin for easy high-gram dosing.

Thiocid: 60 capsules. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) exerts its potent antioxidant effects in both its oxidized and reduced forms. It helps recycle other antioxidants, including glutathione – an essential antioxidant for liver detoxification. Alpha-lipoic acid has historically provided benefit after toxic insults to the liver. For example, lipoic acid infusions were used in the treatment of amanita mushroom poisoning in 75 patients between 1974 and 1978. Normally, up to 50 percent of patients recover without intervention; however, 89 percent (67 of 75) recovered after lipoic acid infusion. ALA appears to improve tissue redox status in metal toxicity and during chelation with dithiol compounds, including dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). In addition to its antioxidant effects, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) appears capable of chelating certain metals. In animal studies, it has been found to protect against arsenic poisoning and cadmium-induced hepatotoxicity. In vitro, ALA chelated mercury from renal slices. While in vitro and animal studies indicate superior bioavailability of pure R-lipoic acid, many clinical studies have used the racemic mixture. Thorne offers customers a choice by providing two dosage options of alpha-lipoic acid, containing the racemic mixture of R and S. Thiocid provides 100 mg alpha-lipoic acid per capsule, providing an effective dose for prevention or pediatric use.

Phosphatidyl Choline: 60 gelcaps. Phosphatidylcholine is a primary phospholipid in cell membranes. A source of choline and a major component of hepatic cell membranes, phosphatidylcholine has been shown in numerous studies to protect liver cells from damage from a variety of toxins, such as ethanol, many prescription drugs, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene (used in dry cleaning and as a degreasing solvent), Amanita phalloides (deathcap mushroom), and others. Phosphatidylcholine provides significant amelioration of liver damage, probably because liver recovery following damage requires substantial replacement of cell membrane mass. The findings from eight double-blind trials and numerous other clinical reports indicate consistently significant clinical benefit, including improvement of enzymatic and other biochemical indicators, faster functional and structural rebuilding of liver tissue, and accelerated restoration of subjects’ overall well-being. Hepatic conditions that can benefit from phosphatidylcholine supplementation include drug- or alcohol-induced liver damage, fatty liver, and hepatitis B and C. In addition to cell membranes, phosphatidylcholine is an important component of circulating lipoproteins in the bloodstream. It is also a major constituent of bile, necessary for fat emulsification, absorption, and transport. Phosphatidylcholine has the potential to decrease absorption of dietary cholesterol and further regulate cholesterol by decreasing its synthesis and initiating its conversion to bile salts. This increases the excretion of lipids via the bile with resultant lowering of lipids in the bloodstream.

MediClear: 32.45 ozs. The MediClear Program: The MediClear program is an easy-to-implement, affordable 3-week protocol that emphasizes healthful, hypo-allergenic dietary changes coupled with supplementation including MediClear. This approach delivers a nutrient-dense diet with extra cofactors that are necessary for optimal liver detoxification. The MediClear program is designed to be implemented incrementally, to gradually move your patients into and out of the program. During Week 1, the patient is eased into the protocol while consuming a diet that is less antigenic and less dependent on animal-based protein. During Week 2, the MediClear dose is increased. All animal-based protein is excluded to allow more cleansing to take place. The Week 3 diet is the same as Week 1, allowing the patient to re-introduce animal proteins (if desired) and reduce the reliance on MediClear. Unlike other programs, this protocol is not meant to be rigid; instead, it has been designed to be flexible, according to patient and practitioner needs. The program can be shortened or extended as needed, the MediClear dosage can be changed, and other supplementation can be added to the protocol. Extra Nutrients and Botanicals: Catechins (from green tea extract) are included to promote proper hepatic Phase I detoxification and as a potent antioxidant. Glutathione and N-acetylcysteine are added for their antioxidant activity and to support hepatic Phase II detoxification. The amino acids glycine and taurine, and the amino acid derivative trimethylglycine, are also included for their supportive role in Phase II detoxification, along with the sulfur-containing compound MSM. L-glutamine supports proper intestinal health. Quercetin chalcone is included for its antioxidant activity and mast cell-stabilizing action. Our stable probiotic, Lactobacillus sporogenes, helps balance the normal intestinal flora. See label copy for a complete listing of ingredients. The Difference: MediClear is different than most similar beverage mixes. MediClear contains more protein, fewer carbohydrates, more accessory detox cofactors, special nutrients and a probiotic for gut health, and is more affordable than other detox formulas.

Glycine: 250 capsules. Clinically, glycine is an important amino acid for relaxation, detoxification, and normal muscle function. Glycine plays a key role in maintaining healthy function of the central nervous system (CNS). Along with GABA, glycine is considered one of the most important inhibitory neurotransmitters in the CNS — particularly in the brainstem and spinal cord. Research indicates this amino acid may be beneficial in management of seizures, hyperactivity, manic (bipolar) depression, and schizophrenia. One study involving 22 schizophrenic patients, who were initially unresponsive to conventional treatments, observed that adding glycine to their ongoing antipsychotic medication resulted in significant reduction of their symptoms. More research concerning the effects of glycine on schizophrenia is underway. Other studies have shown that glycine may also help improve memory retrieval loss in those that suffer from a wide variety of sleep-depriving conditions, including schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, jet lag, and overwork. The benefits of glycine are not just limited to the CNS. Glycine plays a key role in phase II liver detoxification, via conjugation directly with certain toxins and through conjugation with glutathione, which is composed of three amino acids — cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. In addition, glycine is necessary for the production of healthy DNA and RNA, and therefore plays an important role in ensuring healthy formation and function of cells throughout the body. Glycine is one of three amino acids (along with arginine and methionine) needed for the synthesis of creatine, which in turn supplies energy to muscle and nerve cells. High concentrations of glycine are found not only in the muscles, but in the skin and other connective tissues as well. Approximately 30 percent of collagen is composed of glycine. Consequently, without glycine the body would not be able to effectively repair damaged tissues. Glycine plays an important role in maintaining a healthy digestive system. It helps regulate the synthesis of the bile acid used to digest fats. Glycine also helps the body in regulating glucose utilization for energy. Consequently, glycine supplementation may be useful for treating symptoms characterized by low energy and fatigue, such as hypoglycemia, anemia, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Cysteplus: 90 capsules. Well recognized for its powerful detoxification capability in the liver. Strong antioxidant activity with multiple beneficial impacts. Supports good pulmonary health by decreasing thickness of mucus. N-acetylcysteine for liver support, detoxification, and immune support. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a sulfur-containing amino acid, is the precursor of the amino acids L-cysteine and glutathione. Animal and human studies of NAC have shown it to have powerful antioxidant activity. In addition to its antioxidant activity, NAC is effective in promoting normal liver detoxification. As a sulfur source, NAC stimulates glutathione (an important antioxidant produced in the body) synthesis and activity, promotes liver detoxification, and is a powerful molecule capable of scavenging free radicals. Research suggests NAC is capable of enhancing immunity. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, NAC was shown to positively impact lymphocyte cell numbers. NAC has application for maintaining good pulmonary health due to its mucolytic activity. NAC’s sulfur cleaves bonds in mucoproteins, causing mucus to be subsequently broken into smaller, less viscous pieces. NAC has been noted to decrease the viscoelasticity of nasal mucus and increase the clearance of mucus by the cilia by thinning of secretions, thus helping maintain good pulmonary health.
