| HMC Hesperidin:
60 capsules. Hesperidin is the predominant flavonoid in lemons and oranges. While hesperidin itself is not very water soluble, Thorne’s patented hesperidin methyl chalcone (HMC) form is highly soluble, allowing for greater absorption of the molecule from the gastrointestinal tract. As with all flavonoids, HMC is an antioxidant. It stabilizes histamine-releasing mast cells and inhibits the cataract-producing enzyme aldose reductase. In addition, HMC has anti-inflammatory and blood vessel-stabilizing effects. Taken along with vitamin C, HMC was shown to significantly decrease the incidence of hot flashes in menopausal women. Although hesperidin methyl chalcone is included in Meta-Balance because of its ability to alleviate hot flashes, Meta-Balance also contains phytoestrogenic botanicals that might be contraindicated is some patients (those with a history of hormone-related cancers, for instance). Therefore, we offer hesperidin methyl chalcone as a stand-alone product. |

| Rhodiola:
60 capsules. Rhodiola rosea has been extensively studied in Russia and Scandinavian countries for over 35 years and is categorized as an adaptogen because of its ability to increase resistance to chemical, biological, and physical stressors. Rhodiola has been found to inhibit stress-induced depletion of catecholamines and facilitate the transport of neurotransmitters within the brain. The adaptogenic properties of Rhodiola have been attributed primarily to this ability to influence levels and activity of neurotransmitters and opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins. Because it is an adaptogen, Rhodiola has the potential to normalize neurotransmitters in the central nervous system without causing drowsiness or fatigue. Russian studies suggest a role for Rhodiola in situations characterized by a decline in work performance, poor appetite, sleep disturbances, irritability, headaches, and fatigue. Clinical studies have found improved mental performance in physicians on night duty supplementing with Rhodiola. Medical students given Rhodiola during exam periods reported improved concentration and performance, as well as enhanced wellbeing, improved sleep, and greater mood stability. In summary, Rhodiola modulates the physical and emotional responses to stress. In addition to aiding sleep, it can enhance mood and decrease anxiety, allowing for more efficient functioning under stressful conditions. |

| Coleus Forskohlii:
60 capsules. Coleus forskohlii root contains the diterpene forskolin, which activates adenylate cyclase, and in turn increases cellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) concentrations. Ingestion of Coleus extracts, and the subsequent increase in cAMP, can be helpful in decreasing histamine release from mast cells and basophils, while mitigating the inflammatory response in individuals with such conditions as asthma, psoriasis, and eczema. Studies suggest the increased cAMP stimulated by Coleus extracts relaxes respiratory airway smooth muscle, resulting in bronchodilation and improved respiratory function in asthma. Forskolin inhibits IgE-mediated release of the potent inflammatory mediators histamine and leukotriene C4 from human basophils and lung mast cells. This suggests Coleus might be of benefit in inhibiting immediate hypersensitivity reactions. |

| Melaton-5:
60 capsules. Various cancer types have been shown to be responsive to oral melatonin (10-50 mg daily), including breast cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer, metastatic renal-cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and brain metastases from solid tumors. In a study of 30 patients with untreatable metastatic solid tumors, 20 mg oral melatonin daily in conjunction with low doses of the antitumor cytokines, interleukin-2 and -12, significantly increased lymphocyte proliferation and the anticancer effect of these cytokines. Research observing the use of melatonin alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy found melatonin may be a beneficial therapeutic tool for patients with colorectal cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, or metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. A meta-analysis of 10 randomized, controlled trials demonstrated melatonin therapy for various cancers reduced the relative risk of death at one year by an average of 34 percent. These results were independent of cancer type and melatonin dosage, which ranged from 10-40 mg daily; no adverse events were reported. In a study of 14 metastatic breast cancer patients who had not responded to initial therapy with tamoxifen, 20 mg of melatonin was administered daily in the evening along with tamoxifen. A partial response was seen in 28 percent of patients whose disease would have otherwise been expected to progress rapidly. In those who responded clinically, significant declines were also found in serum levels of the tumor growth factor IGF-1. This response was irrespective of estrogen-receptor status. Thorne’s Melaton-5 supplies 5 mg of melatonin in each capsule, to accommodate a higher dosage regimen. Timing of the melatonin dosage appears to be important, with the most effective protocol being a diurnal cycle similar to the physiological rhythm of melatonin secretion (once daily dosing in the evening before bed). |

| Melaton-1:
90 capsules. Melatonin administration, regardless of dosage time, exerts a hypnotic and sedative effect when given in doses of 0.3-5.0 mg. If taken before onset of endogenous melatonin secretion, even low doses can induce sleep. Melatonin is thought to potentiate the affects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) via direct interaction with GABA receptors. Research indicates melatonin exerts a sleep-promoting action by accelerating sleep initiation, improving sleep maintenance, and marginally altering sleep architecture. Thorne’s Melaton-1 supplies 1 mg of melatonin in each capsule. This potency is ideal for those patients who may only require a low dose of melatonin to help with sleep or maintaining normal circadian rhythm. |

| Basic Pygeum Herbal:
60 capsules. Botanical and amino acid blend for a healthy prostate. Basic Pygeum Herbal contains plant-based substances important for the health of the prostate. The amino acids alanine, glycine, and glutamic acid have also been added for their ability to benefit the health of the prostate. Interest in Pygeum africanum began in the 1700s when European travelers learned from South African tribes how to use the bark of the plant to support male urinary tract health. Serenoa repens, also known as saw palmetto, is native to the southeastern United States, Southern Europe, and North Africa. Traditional uses of saw palmetto include the support of the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. The berries have also been thought to be an aphrodisiac. Modern usage of saw palmetto as a dietary supplement, however, is overwhelmingly for the benefit of the prostate. |

| Indole-3-Carbinol:
60 capsules. Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a compound found in high concentrations in vegetables of the Brassica family, including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. As a dietary supplement, I3C provides key nutritional support for liver detoxification. It also plays an important role in supporting female reproductive health. The majority of ingested I3C is absorbed in the small intestine as diindolylmethane (DIM), which is thought to be the primary contributor to I3C's beneficial properties. DIM has been shown to selectively bind to estrogen receptors and may act as an estrogen antagonist at physiological concentration. In the liver, I3C promotes the metabolism of estrogen and increases the ratio of 2-hydroxy estrogen to 16-hydroxy estrogen. The 2-hydroxy estrogens, less active than the 16-hydroxy estrogens, generally are eliminated more rapidly from the body. One prospective study found postmenopausal women with the most favorable urinary 2:16-hydroxyestrone ratio were most likely to maintain good female health. Preliminary studies have examined the efficacy, safety, and optimal supplementation of I3C. A 12-week phase I trial conducted on 17 women found a 66-percent increase in urinary 2:16-hydroxyestrone ratio with administration of 400 mg I3C daily. |

| Iodine and Tyrosine:
60 capsules. Key nutrients for thyroid support. Beneficial in treatment of fatigue. Iodine & Tyrosine, essential mineral and amino acid support for the thyroid gland. The thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), are two hormones produced by the thyroid gland. The major form of thyroid hormone in the blood is thyroxine (T4); in fact, there is generally 20 times more T4 in the blood than T3. The thyroid hormones are essential to the proper development and differentiation of all cells of the human body. The thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, affecting how humans use these compounds to produce energy. Individual thyroid hormones have important functions in the body; for example, thyroxine supports cardiac output, heart rate, respiratory rate, and basal metabolic rate. The thyroid gland can’t produce its hormones without the presence of the amino acid, L-tyrosine, and the mineral, iodine. Both are necessary for the production of T4 and T3. Thus, a deficiency of either the amino acid or the mineral or both could contribute to low thyroid hormone levels. Studies have found L-tyrosine may be beneficial for treating fatigue, a common symptom of low thyroid hormone levels. Individuals should be aware that some foods can cause a relative iodine deficiency by binding to iodine, making it inaccessible for thyroid hormone production, although cooking these foods tends to make them less so. Such foods include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, soy, peanuts, pine nuts, turnips, and rutabaga. |
