180 capsules. Elevated plasma homocysteine has joined cholesterol and triglycerides as a leading indicator of risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition to increased risk for cardiovascular disease, high plasma homocysteine levels have been epidemiologically and clinically implicated in osteoporosis, recurrent miscarriage, cognitive decline, and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Numerous studies advocate lowering plasma homocysteine levels via nutritional supplementation. A number of biochemical abnormalities can raise homocysteine levels. These biochemical defects can be addressed by providing proper nutrient cofactors. Folic acid (as 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate), vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin), and betaine (trimethylglycine) are involved in recycling homocysteine to the amino acid methionine, while the breakdown of homocysteine into the beneficial amino acids cysteine and taurine is facilitated by pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (the active form of vitamin B6). Clinical studies have shown each of these nutrients can help lower plasma homocysteine levels. In addition to the homocysteine-reducing effects of the ingredients in Methyl-Guard, folic acid has been shown to improve vascular endothelial function, working as a cofactor with vitamin C for L-arginine-induced nitric oxide production. Homocysteine is increased in individuals with a common genetic defect involving the enzyme responsible for conversion of folic acid to the active methyl donor 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Because of this, Methyl-Guard contains 400 mcg of active 5-MTHF per capsule. Elevated homocysteine is a known risk factor for cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Significant deficiencies in homocysteine-metabolizing cofactors are commonly seen in the elderly population, with a resultant increase in homocysteine with advancing age. Vascular damage can be caused by elevated homocysteine, resulting in an increased risk of multiple brain infarcts and dementia. Elevated homocysteine levels associated with aging, as well as low levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12, can result in hypomethylation of numerous substances, including DNA and proteins. This in turn renders vascular structures and neurons more susceptible to damage and cell death. Providing the nutritional cofactors for proper functioning of the methionine cycle may improve methylation and protect the brain from damage. Methyl-Guard was the first homocysteine-lowering supplement on the market, and is the only one that contains the active, body-ready forms of all the homocysteine-metabolizing nutrient cofactors. |
